The idea to create this new series of paintings started coming to light in my mind when a friend of mine was finishing his new apartment. He was looking for some last furniture pieces, decorations and other small things which would complete his brand new home.My friend was excited to finally move in. The idea to create another larger series of paintings was exciting for me as well, so we talked about what he liked and which were his favourite artworks from my portfolio.
It did not take us long to both agree, it is again going to be another black and white series with a touch of one more colour.
I visited his apartment before the last finishing works as this helped me feel and also get to know the place. I took the necessary measurements as I normally do with all my private clients when planning these types of art projects.
Later on as I have been rethinking about the place, the style of the interior and how the rooms were separated, I came up with an idea. To turn this series into a story which would start from the bedroom and end in the kitchen. Imagining his journey as he wakes up every morning, the route he takes until he reaches the kitchen. Also passing through a corridor which connects the rooms together. This made complete sense to me.
“The order of the paintings matter, without looking at them in the right sequential order one will not be able to figure out where the story begins and where it ends.”
I have played with the idea in my mind that it could be actually just one picture separated into 5 paintings, but due to the large space and the distance between the first two paintings being in the corridor and the last three in the kitchen, I changed my mind and discarded the idea.
There were some other projects which took priority during that same particular time. It was quite a while until I got the chance to go back to this new series of paintings. The story in my mind had changed after reflecting a little bit from another perspective.
A new upcoming artistic project which made me reflect about how we change as human beings, how we think when we are teenagers, our mind, our soul and our heart. We all have our ways of imagining things. The idea of how it will all turn out and how it works is all based on what we have been through. It also depends on what we have been told or even on all the content we consumed and absorbed. Movies, articles in magazines, the internet and outside resources all play an important part. Then the first experiences kick in, new relationships thus we start changing.
All 5 paintings ready for the installation
These thoughts triggered in my mind a series of pictures like walking through a woman’s emotions and life experiences. From her adolescence until adulthood. The Idealism, naivety, fear, the first love, the disappointments, pain, wrong decisions, regrets or no regrets at all and inner fights. These 5 paintings will represent a part of it while reaching another emotional milestone. Changing her to the woman she is today, looking back at what time took away from her. What all those stages along the path of life had to offer until now. Is she still recognising herself? Or did she lose her actual self. Is she confident enough to understand her values? Or is she now broken after all. How did she manage to fight all this and protect herself?
I wanted to portray a woman who has been through a lot, who is sensitive, in some parts broken like all of us. Yet confident enough to understand her values. The woman still willing to acknowledge that this is herself now, changed, stronger but also weaker at times. The woman who fights back to whatever life throws at her. Not losing her hopes and dreams like when she was a teenager. She wants someone by her side who will make her feel as that girl she still is inside.
Finished installation of the series.
I wanted the message to be strong and my paintings mysterious. Mysterious in a way of expressions, postures with a touch of sensuality but mainly focused on the emotional aspect.
The actual execution of this non-profit project came up naturally as I progressed together with all the details and technique used. Experimenting and working on the first two paintings worked well for the entire series and also for the message I wanted to convey.I named this series “Wounded rhymes” …
